HEADBAND
Cast on 19 sts.

1st row (RS): 1 st in garter st, * K2, P1 * repeat a total of 5 times – end row with K2 and 1 st in garter st.
2nd row (WS): 1 st in garter st, * P2, K1 * repeat a total of 5 times – end row with P2 and 1 st in garter st.
Repeat 1st and 2nd row.

When piece measures 3” on next row from RS inc all P 1 to P 2 = 24 sts on needle.

When piece measures 5” on next row from RS inc all P 2 to P 3 = 29 sts on needle.

When piece measures 7” on next row from RS inc all P 3 to P 4 = 34 sts on needle.

When piece measures 8 1/4” work next row from RS as follows:
1 st in garter st, K 2, P 4 at the same time as you P2 in last st so there will be P 5, *put next K 2 on a cable needle in front of work, put next P 4 on a cable needle behind work, K 2 from left needle,  P 4 from cable needle behind work, K2 from cable needle in front of work, P 4 at the same time as you P 2 in last st so there will be P 5*, repeat *-* one more  time, end with K 2, 1 st in garter st  = 37 sts on needle.
Continue with P over P and K over K as before.

When piece measures 9½” work next row from RS as follows:
1 st in garter st, K 2, P 5, K2, P 4, put next K2 on a cable needle in front of work, put next P 5 on a cable needle behind work, K 2 from left needle, P 5 from cable needle behind work, K 2 from cable needle in front of work, P 4, K 2, P 5, K 2, 1 st in garter st.

This is half way and now work piece mirrored – i.e. when piece measures 10 3/4” work next row from RS the same way as when piece measured 8 1/4”, but now dec all P 5 to P 4 by purling 4th and 5th P st tog. Continue with K 2, P 4 at the same time as you dec mirrored to where it was inc when piece measure  12”, 14” and 16”.
After last dec there are 19 sts on needle again. 
Bind off when piece measures 19”.
Sew sides tog with mattress sts.
